Participative design
As architects, we are present mainly during the design and building phase. The period of use will be much longer. We make the design together with future users and inhabitants to combine two fields of knowledge and assure as much as possible the plan will fit the spatial needs. ‘Voids’ or inn-betweens are built in to allow for variable uses. Finishing materials, heating, ventilation and other appliances are chosen to adapt easily. The method for participative design was developed in different countries over the course of years. Private Commissioning is a relatively new policy in the Netherlands. Collective Development is an accessible and efficient strategy for housing. Many forms of collective ownership and self-managed housing exist; every group and location requires a tailored solution.
